Balancing Biofuels and Food Security – Uganda

Jun 2009 - Jan 2012

Project Description

NOVI Energy was selected to provide Technical Assistance to define and develop a biofuels strategy by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) for the Republic of Uganda. The Government of Uganda (GoU) was in the process of adopting a set of new policies, regulations, and frameworks to encourage the development of biofuel resources. The strategy that NOVI developed as part of this effort helped to define the country’s requirement for biofuels, appropriate blending ratios with conventional fossil fuels, specific crops and plantation sizes, as well as technologies for fuel extraction. The study also evaluated the utilization of waste and by-products for electric power production. An important part of the study focused on ensuring zero impact to food security.
